Think About It: L.Gee- whiz

Last week I would've said, hey, have you got some free time for the next 10-months?  Well, until soon-to-be-former State Attorney General and already-U.S House candidate Doug Chin stepped in after two others said "no thanks", the state's lieutenant governor slot was open. You would've gotten an office, a staff, parking, and the absolute reality that you'll be looking for work at the end of the year, unless you also decided to toss your name into the ring of aspiring LG candidates who have already indicting that they will be running for the office this August. And Chin can run for federal office while still holding a state office, something he avoided by recently announcing his resignation as State Attorney General, which he wasn't going to do until March… How convenient. How confusing…. Hmmm…

There have been 12 Hawaii Lieutenant Governors since statehood in 1959. And if you think the job is simply a stepping stone well, actually, just three LGs have gone on to become governor- Messrs. Ariyoshi, Waihee, and Cayetano. Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz moved on to Washington, D.C. from their roles here as LG. Hawaii's lieutenant governor is one of just four in the country who also acts as our designated Secretary of State, issuing orders granting legal name changes, certifying documents, processing documents, and acting as a repository for various documents- all of which sounds administrative and clerical, and not something you would necessarily run for office to do for four or eight years under leadership who simply may not care too much for you.
