BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Big Island police utilized DNA testing to identify the man found dead in a burned car on Christmas Day last year.

Police identified the man as 67-year-old Kalapana resident, Douglas Vernon Don

On Dec. 25, 2017, police officers responded to 39th Avenue near Pohaku Drive in the Orchidland subdivision.

They found a car engulfed in flames around 10 a.m.

After the fire was extinguished, officers made the gruesome discovery of human remains within the vehicle. The remains were burnt beyond recognition and a murder investigation was initiated.

The suspect remains at large.

Police have linked the apparent murder to another incident at a property near Aulii Drive. Details on that investigation were not immediately known.

Anyone with information on the murder is asked to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311 or Detective Kayne Kelii at (808) 961-2378. Email: Kayne.kelii@hawaiicounty.gov.
