Think About It: Waianae & Mars

We truly are a planet of mixed metaphors and strange realities. On the one hand, I got an email from a viewer who said her nephew lives in a truck in the Waianae Boat Harbor. She said he and countless others living in cars at the harbor and nearby were never included in the actual count of how many people live there. So who knows what the real numbers are; we just know that there are once again far too many people with far too few solutions.

And then we have the Mars simulation mission, which has been put on hold due to a medical condition of one of the crew members. The NASA-funded mission to try to recreate what it might be like on a planet with little oxygen and travel plans years away has been put on hold 8,200 feet above sea level, while we can't figure out how to deal with sewage and trash dumping and perhaps can't even count how many people are really affected.

We have put on hold a $1-million project to study human interaction in a dome on a mountain simulating, maybe, a less-than-friendly orb 34-million miles away of which we have incomplete data, yet we can't figure out how to do a better job getting reasonable housing or even the water bill paid for earth-bound inhabitants at sea level in Waianae, let alone under the highways and near the medical school. Maybe we should can the Mars plan and let the homeless use the domes right here on sea level earth? Space travel? This one's just spacy? Think about it…
