Think About It: High School Touchdown!

Most states classify their high school athletic programs by size. This classification concept is widely accepted nationwide, but Hawaii has not done that for a number of reasons, even intra-league among public and private schools. But with the new football agreement announced a month ago, a lot of what was wrong will be rectified  on the football battlefields by establishing a clear delineation among Open, Division I and Division II teams.

The new high school football plan will allow for some wonderful, old rivalries to be renewed regularly, create new rivalries, will allow for much better balance and should lead to far fewer forfeits and lopsided scores, we hope. It has been great to see the openmindedness and willingness between the OIA and ILH on Oahu with some help from outside business partners to ensure that athletes, schools, and fans will see a more competitive and fairer system by which to judge teams going forward.

The cross-scheduling between the leagues and the fact that safety is a consideration in this new deal bodes well for everyone involved. The opportunity for exciting games and additional revenues for many schools should also prove to be a positive over the initial two years of this approved experiment. It's been almost 50-years since the OIA branched off from the ILH; this new football agreement involving 29 Oahu schools is a huge step forward on so many levels, including even the basic communications between the two great leagues. Think about it…
