Think About It: Hula. Rejoice

One of the great lessons of hula is the spirit of sharing. This ancient craft that we witness tonight through these modern day performers only comes about through an incredible amount of training and a serious effort to understand the particulars and rich history that comes about through the combination of each oli, each mele, each exacting movement. The rationale behind each performance piece is explained in detail by a trained kumu, steeped in his or her halau lineage, to a willing solo artist or complete halau- and we are very fortunate to witness the end results annually.

It is through the expression of these wonderful performers that stories are told, history is preserved, and ancient legends are revealed while modern day ones are created. It is art, but it is also so much more. Ask anyone who's ever graced the stage in Hilo and let him or her tell you about the preparation, the chicken skin moments, the togetherness of their fellow dancers, teachers, and musicians, and the fact that the "Merrie Monarch Festival" is an experience they will always cherish, and never forget.

So as you sit back and enjoy the "Merrie Monarch Festival" unfolding in front of you tonight- at home, at a friend's house, in Hawaii, or in one of over 100 countries worldwide watching via our live stream, we hope you can simply relax and revel in this heartfelt and vital piece of Hawaiiana that is so representative of this amazing place that we call home. Mahalo for watching! Think about it…
