Think About It: NCA... Hey!

I wrote this Friday after stewing for a bit, so please pardon me if I seem a bit late to the "what happened?" men's volleyball selection debate. The NCAA, or No Clue At All, provided yet one more disservice to its teetering standing with its ridiculous committee decision to exclude Hawaii from the men's volleyball championship tournament. This was further reiterated by the coaches' poll last Monday as UH was ranked #4 in the nation, while UC Irvine slid to #5 after UH beat UCI in the Big West tournament semi-finals days earlier.

The three-person selection committee was manned by representatives from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, championship host UCLA, and Ohio State. That's right, ‘twas a three-person committee on which two of the representatives hailed from schools that are in the tournament. Transparency? A sport in need of loving ignored reality even as it reached its annual pinnacle- the tournament?  How ridiculous. So they decide to reward 3rd place, Big West team UCI over 2nd place Hawaii, who beat #1 Long Beach State, #3 UCLA, and beat UCI two out of three matches, including the seemingly all-important, but apparently not so vital, semi-final Big West match. UCI did twice beat #2 BYU, who Hawaii lost to. But UCI lost twice to both UCLA and Long Beach State, and also to #12 UCSB, #8 Pepperdine and #15 Fort Wayne, while UH was swept by #9 CSUN.

Then the committee sent undermanned Harvard all the way out to UCLA for its play-in match, expensive and short-sighted; and Ohio State plays at home vs. King of Tennessee… Who? Oh, and, if they advance, UCLA and Ohio State will not  meet until the NCAA finals. Amazing! Perhaps the Bruins' selection committee rep knew that UH would bring along maybe 2,000 faithful, UH LA-based fans to the tournament at UCLA, and thus felt safer with the sure-to-be smaller UCI contingent of fans that might show up? Who knows what was thought during this unfortunate and poorly conceived tiny committee decision, but UH is sidelined. Sadly, we've seen this all too often before, with UH seedings, no bowl games, and other questionable, but obviously subjective decisions in years past. We search for fair, objective reasons and come up empty. Sorry, Charlie, the deservedly beseiged NCAA just didn't think this one through; again. Or maybe they did. Think about it…
