Think About It: And Next Year...

Congratulations are surely in order for the state legislature, which managed to put aside the usual rancor, power-mongering, self-serving positioning for job security, and partisanship to push through seemingly valuable legislation on a number of fronts. But now that we have officially entered the legislative offseason, perhaps calmer times and clearer thinking can impact those whose jobs it is to resolve vital issues that will require more than attention next year- the items that need action and resolution.

Three years of not providing an answer for vacation rentals on a number of fronts (including legality and taxation, while local rents skyrocket) is more than enough time. Might I suggest that committee chairs spend a month in a non-air conditioned, illegal rental on the windward side and emerge only when they've figured out a way to handle this growing conundrum? More visitors, street parking, water and sewage usage, traffic, general wear and tear, but no solutions. It's high time for resolution, but let's not wait until rushed sessions in March or April next year, which will simply provide more questions than answers for the fourth consecutive year.

And a better effort needs to be made by those in charge to regulate those in charge- conflicts of interest due to outside jobs and obvious influencers simply cannot make the public feel more comfortable. Amazing how our local volunteer boards are required to provide detailed and complete family financial information, which is why so many choose not to volunteer, yet our elected reps can hold outside jobs and still vote on anything they feel comfortable with. These are just a couple of items that should require our part-time legislators to spend time over the next seven months to help ensure that the 2019 legislature in a non-election year is really a winner. Think about it…
