HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

There will be overnight outages for some Oahu residents in July for HECO to perform "urgent upgrades" to the underground cables.

The work is set to begin on July 16 and will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Mondays through Thursday.

During these hours, residents in the Iwilei, Kakaako and Ala Moana areas may experience power outages.

About 400 business and 2,500 residential customers are expected to be impacted.

"Hawaiian Electric engineers discovered flaws in coupling devices, known as splices, that connect high voltage cables to the circuits that supply power to homes and businesses," HECO said in a news release.

The outages are needed so crews can work safely underground.

"Replacing the splices before they fail will help avoid prolonged and unplanned outages, and we want to resolve this issue as quickly and as safely as possible," HECO added.

Residents in the affected areas will be sent letters reminding them of the outages.

Customers with additional questions about the upcoming work may call 548-7311.
