Think About It: Local Trips To Yesterday

While some might argue that it's always summertime here in Hawaii nei, the official start date of summer is June 21st.  Once you leave school, the idea of "summer vacation" lasting for weeks or months becomes a fond, distant memory. With adulthood comes responsibility, including work, family, chores, and all of the other things we get when we grow up. Yes, youth is truly wasted on the young… We all need to retain a sense neoteny- a childlike exuberance; we all need to lighten up occasionally. Growing up can really be so over-rated.

So what might you do differently this summer? There are so many things to do, see and eat right here at home, will you find the time to take advantage of your time off, or your kid's time off? Even if it's a day long excursion somewhere different, why not chance ‘em. I remember driving once to the windward side with a co-worker, and she commented that she hadn't been to Kailua in 20 years. 20 years?! And she lived in Makiki!

Maybe it's time to revisit the revamped zoo, or the Waikiki Aquarium. Maybe it's time to visit the beaches of Nanakuli or Haleiwa, or brunch on the beach in Waikiki. Maybe a trip to Hana or Princeville. Maybe a drive up Tantalus or to the Pali Lookout will bring back vivid memories of yesteryear. Summertime is as good a time as any locally to stretch out geographically. Remind yourself and ones you love of just how diverse each island and each island community is throughout our great island chain by getting out there. Think about it…
