Forget the ad about "what's in your wallet?" The new question this week here is "what's in your trunk, or back seat?" Because if you don't have your own bags to fill up with your store bought purchases, it's now going to cost you on Oahu. The days of needing to have a cooler in the trunk only on potluck days with the kids is gone. If you're planning on buying refrigerated or frozen goods at the store and then you're going to be out for a while, that cooler in the trunk will be a practical and handy travel companion.
We already have far too much plastic and waste in our midst and in our oceans, so this forced change of habit will not only save you money, but will soon save us from seeing those unsightly ghost-like, white, plastic bags blowing across the freeway or sitting on the sidewalks, all wet and crumbled, like some form of invasive flora we don't ever want to see.
And for those slow to manage this change and respond accordingly, well, you've actually got 18-months before all of the thin, plastic bags are eliminated from businesses. So toss a few recyclable bags in the back seat or trunk, remember the cooler for big shopping days, and rejoice in knowing that- like it or not- you're making an environmental impact on the good side, for a change. Now, about those plastic water bottles… Think about it.
