Think About It: Housing Hope

What looks like it's going to be a really good story down the road got underway last week as the Nohona Hale project, which is slated to be completed in just one year's time, had its blessing in Kakaako. A combination public-private and non-profit partnership makes these upcoming micro-units a big step in the right direction. Though each unit will be have just 300 square feet of living space plus a lanai, the mere fact that truly affordable housing for lower income residents is going up quickly is a very positive sign.

The highest rent in the building will be under $1,300 per month, and the financing for the project through a state agency will hopefully be an impetus to allow for more units to be built soon. Perhaps finding spaces not in the heart of Honolulu for the next few projects would allow for even lower monthly rents for potential tenants. This is an addition that is badly needed, especially for people earning under $50,000 per year, which is the upper limit one can earn to be eligible to get into the lottery for one of these units early next year.

Interested parties, however, can call EAH Housing now at 439-6286 to get more information and get on the "interested party" list. Micro-housing has proven to be an effective alternative to sky high and unaffordable rents in other expensive mainland cities- like Seattle, San Francisco, and New York City- so it will be important to keep learning best practices from other entrepreneurs as we look to resolve some of our local housing crunch in the very near future… finally. Think about it…
