Think About It: Mars Rules

Records are meant to be broken. A truism restated time and time again, but I'm not sure if this one will ever be surpassed. Hawaii's own Bruno Mars sold more than 105,000 concert tickets over three separate days in less than six hours total- six hours!  Now I'm old enough to remember the incredible sellouts here by major names over the past 35+ years at the Blaisdell Arena and at Aloha Stadium, and there are some big names.

Back in the day, Journey and Earth, Wind, and Fire could sell out four Blaisdell dates. That might be 30,000 total seats. Michael Jackson, his sister Janet, the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, U2, even the great triple bill summer jams in the late 70s and early 80s at Aloha Stadium- none eclipsed the 100,000+ tickets sold by Bruno Mars in six hours. And no, there won't be a fourth Stadium show… I don't think, even though thousands were left in limbo waiting on their computers and cell phones as the third show sold out, aside from some single seats, in under two hours. And… the tickets sold out to local credit card holders only, a real coup.

A once in a lifetime phenomenon? Perhaps, but it does show that this town… this major city… and this archaic venue can handle big-time events and handle them efficiently, though we all understand and empathize with the frustrations and realities of supply and demand. I believe more big time concerts and sporting events are on the way here. And when the new Stadium in Halawa gets built in hopefully five or six years, well… let's just say that Honolulu can become a regular shining star in the major live event business for decades to come, here on earth, thanks in part to Mars. Think about it…
