Think About It: Weekend Wake Up

Boy, what a weekend that was! From a foreboding sense of possible doom and gloom on Thursday, to an amazing Little League World Series triumph in Pennsylvania and a thrilling UH football win on the road. Oh, yeh, the hurricane blasted us with tons of rain in some areas, but spared us (for the most part) from devastating winds. And while the cleanups begin on Maui and Hawaii Island, there is no question that Mother Nature took a timely left turn and we got some helpful trade winds to blow the top off of Lane before the damage was worse.

It was almost surreal on Saturday as warnings became watches and then alerts. I was watching the incredible, poised, humble, happy Honolulu Little League team win its second game against a tough, Georgia team, when former UH coach June Jones was interviewed among the crowd. And on the bottom of the screen, the sports ticker was informing me that St. Louis High's own Marcus Mariotta was going 6 for 8 in limited quarterback duty in a Tennessee Titans' pre-season game, all the while the updates and alerts indicated that Lane was no longer living life in the fast lane, but was instead meandering down a westward road, leaving behind mountains of rain, but not so much on the wind side.

It was eerie driving in town and on the windward side Thursday and Friday, as the lack of cars and people on the streets was surely an indication of possible things to come- and it was good to see people were taking the warnings seriously. So at the end of the long weekend, everyone was soggy, but survived, and got to enjoy some quality time reveling in the joy of youth as the boys of summer brought home Hawaii's 3rd Little League title in the past 13 years and the football Warriors ran and shot themselves to a much-needed, season-opening triumph- on the road and at altitude, no less! Let's hope this excitement continues, while nature cools its heels and offers a respite from heavy wind, non-stop rain, meandering lava, and streaky wildfires. Think about it…
