Forecast: High surf, breezy trades as Norman nears

High Surf Warning is posted for east-facing shores due to large and dangerous surf generated by Hurricane Norman. Wave heights could reach 12 to 18 feet for east shores of Maui County and the Big Island, and 10 to 15 feet for Kauai and Oahu. There's also a Small Craft Advisory up for windward coastal waters.

Norman is forecast to pass to the north of the state, but there are stronger northeast winds ahead of it. The winds are strong enough for a Wind Advisory to be posted for Lanai. The smaller islands should have locally breezy and mostly sunny weather ahead of Norman, but the Big Island will have more clouds and showers because it is closest to the tropical cyclone. Norman will disrupt the trades and increase tropical moisture as it passes by, so expect some warm and muggy conditions, along with afternoon clouds and showers, for the weekend.

Longer term, we're watching Hurricane Olivia. It's still too far to determine exactly what impact it will have on our weather, but the current forecast track brings it very close to the state early next week.
