WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Department of Health is investigating a water main break at the Hale Koa Hotel. The break ultimately led to a release of sediment into the ocean.

Hotel management says it happened around 11:30 a.m. Monday. A contractor in charge of building the hotel's new pool reportedly hit the the 8-inch line, which sent 500 gallons of water and mixed sediment into the ocean per minute.

The hotel says it shut off water to its Ilima Tower, which left 800 guests without water.

The Asian Pacific Center across the street was also without water.

A dark cloud was seen in the area of water near the discharge which has since cleared up. Health officials say sediment could negatively impact coral.
