KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

There are emergency shelters available in Maui County and on Oahu as lingering effects from Tropical Storm Olivia may be felt into the tail end of the week.

Wednesday evening, as conditions began to clear, the Maui Emergency Management Agency said those who sought shelter — at one point, over 60 people in Maui County — vacated the shelters and headed home.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, officials said the only shelter that remained open on Maui was located at the Lahaina Civic Center. Other shelters that were open earlier in the day were located at Maui High, Kihei Elementary, Kalama Intermediate, Hana High and Elem., Molokai High and Lanai Elem. and High. These shelters could reopen if conditions take an unexpected turn for the worse as more rain moves in Thursday.

Eight emergency shelters also opened on Oahu Tuesday night, but as of Wednesday, city officials said they planned to keep only five open. They were located at:

  • Brigham Young University
  • Kaneohe District Park
  • Manoa Valley District Park
  • Wahiawa District Park
  • Waianae District Park

Some shelters remain open because the threat for heavy rain is lingering into Thursday and Friday.

Those who choose to go to an emergency shelter must bring their own food, water and blankets.

"The Department of Emergency Management wishes to thank The American Red Cross and our City and County of Honolulu employees who are supporting these evacuation shelters," officials said in an update.

At pet-friendly shelters, pets must be in a pet carrier and owners must also provide food and water for their pets.
