Think About It: Car Wars

Sedan sales continue to slide for automobile dealers around the country. While the overall auto business saw about a 1% increase in August, sedans- you know, regular size cars- accounted for less than 30% of overall sales for the first month ever, as SUVs, crossovers, and trucks rule the day. A few years ago, passenger cars made up 50% of all vehicle sales. Sedans have fallen out of favor over the past few years locally and elsewhere throughout the country as gas prices fell, and people just need to jam in more stuff, I guess.

The local spin on this? Well, we have a land crunch issue, and the thought of more big vans and trucks fitting into the ever-shrinking parking spaces we have here- it makes you wonder. Should I add that plastic strip on my door to keep it from getting nailed by the owner of the vehicle next to me when she or he tries to slide in? And if you think parking spaces of the future will allocate an extra six-inches or so to accommodate the proliferation of wider vehicles, think again.

As we continue to fill up every inch of space in Kakaako and as other building go up throughout our state, somehow I just don't think the land owners and building gurus are going to add inches in recognition of our fannies or families when we get into and out of our cars or trucks or SUVs. This is a wonderful health issue given to us by these entrepreneurs! We all just have to lose some weight, or possibly entertain the reality of entering vans via the trunk or slide into our trucks through the back windows to avoid dinging everyone everywhere. Or we could all start Uber-ing everywhere, or rent a bike, or do ride-sharing… lots to think about and so little room. Think about it…
