KALIHI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A man once convicted of murdering a taxi cab driver has been arrested after opening fire in Kalihi early Monday.

Honolulu police arrested 26-year-old Kilani Derego on suspicion of terroristic threatening, firearms offenses and reckless endangering.

Police said the suspect pulled out a gun outside a Palama Street business at around 3:30 a.m.

At least one person then confronted the man, and after a struggle, the suspect ended up in serious condition.

Paramedics said Derego suffered injuries to his head.

According to police, shots were fired, but no one was hit.

Back in 2012, Derego was convicted in the 2010 beating death of Charlys Ty Tang, a husband and father of two.

Another man who was with Derego said Derego delivered the fatal punches and kicks.

Derego was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. But three years later, his conviction was overturned.

Hawaii's Intermediate Court of Appeals ruled that the judge in the murder trial should not have allowed the state to present police statements from another defendant who was refusing to testify.

Derego has not been charged yet in connection with Monday's incident. He remains in police custody.
