Think About It: Train Tracking

Perhaps lost in the shuffle of yet another round of money woes or concerns facing the rail project was the new projected completion date that federal officials put out there- September, 2026. So that's eight years away IF everything goes according to plan… for the next eight years. The original plan in 2012 called for the rail to be done by 2019, but the lawsuits and soap opera that have ensued since then made that original date a dream.

And now, with all of the work that's already been completed, it looks like we have a minimum of eight more years of expected work left before the first choo choo chugs the full route from Kapolei to Ala Moana Center. And since the first date completion estimate was off by about seven years, does that mean that we can now possibly expect this traffic mitigating rapid transit project to be completed by- dare I say it- 2033?!

The real answer is- who knows? With major negotiations still to come between project developers and landowners, with many pilings still to be pounded in deep, and I do mean real deep into the silty, marshy Mapunapuna ground, with traffic congestion sure to slow things down over time, who's to say when this project will finally be completed- start to finish? In the meantime, we can debate extra costs here and there, like the $134 million the feds want added to the project now to feel better that the city has enough money. This train is a long ways from being completed, no matter what the costs or the ultimate completion date. Think about it…
