Think About It: Schools: A Taxing Issue

First there was a decision by a circuit court judge that denied an effort by the counties to remove a ballot measure related to tax investment property funds being used for public school funding. Now the counties are trying to stop the initiative through the state Supreme Court. In the meantime, a WalletHub Today survey analyzed the 50 states and the District of Columbia and ranked Hawaii as the worst state in the country to be a teacher, as teacher salaries show Hawaii ranking dead last, while the school system quality here ranked #39.

While many people understand and are rightfully empathetic to teachers' plight and the need for the facilities and requisite school supplies to be improved statewide, and while many people seem to believe there are major failings on a regular basis in our public education system, your job, as a citizen and a voter, is to familiarize yourself with all of the available evidence related to the wording and true meaning of this measure before you vote this fall. There are obviously two sides to any specific ballot measure, and the arguments both for and against approving this constitutional amendment deserve your full attention and complete understanding.

Hawaii is the only state in America that does not utilize some form of property tax to help fund its public schools; the only state. In your mind, does the wording in this 2018 proposal guarantee that the newly-garnered, property tax money will all go to the schools and at the same time that existing education funds will not be subsequently moved around in an annual shell game at the legislature? Please do your homework, perhaps even talk to your legislator, to find out if this amendment might also affect taxes on your own home. You need answers before you make your voting decision… as it should be. Think about it…
