The Honolulu Police Department says its ready for disaster after unveiling a special center to deal with major emergencies. The alternate communications center is a backup for the primary police dispatch system. It will be activated during disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes. The new system converts radio transmissions into digital messages.
"It's this kind of creativity, it's this kind of cutting edge approach it think that makes our city and police department such a great one," said Mayor Jeremy Harris.
The cost to equip and furnish the center is approximately 900,000 dollars.
