(Honolulu-AP) -- The Federal Aviation Administration has grounded all flights out of Hawaii.
Security has been heightened at the Honolulu International Airport.
A spokesman for the state Department of Transportation says 16 U.S. bound international flights were diverted to Hawaii. Fifteen were to land at Honolulu and one was due at Kona International Airport on the Big Island.
Those flights were past the halfway point and could not turn back.
Several flights from Japan were also reported turned back.
Hawaiian Airlines canceled all trans-Pacific flights in and out of Hawaii until at least midnight. Interisland flights were canceled until at least 2 pm today.
