Honolulu AP- Cheryl Smith of the University of Hawaii has won the Western Athletic Conference women's cross-country championship. She completed the five-kilometer run at the Kaneohe Marine Base Klipper course in 17 minutes, 42-point-8 seconds.
Teammate Casey Mcguire-Turcott was second in 17 minutes, 57-point-six seconds. The Wahine placed fourth in the team rankings. Tulsa finished first.
Bashar Ibrahim of Texas-El Paso won the men's eight-kilometer race, with Rice placing first in the team standings. UH did not compete in the men's race.
Smith and Ibrahim also were honored as the WAC Athletes of the Year.
