(Honolulu-AP) The University of Hawaii men's basketball team beat Norfolk State 76-to-52 last night in their season-opening game at the Nike Tip-Off Tournament.
The Rainbows will face Drake, a 74-65 victor over Sam Houston State, Sunday night for the title.
Carl English scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half to lead Hawaii to victory. Mindaugas Burneika and English hit consecutive 3-pointers to start the game as Hawaii jumped out to a 13-0 lead. Burneika scored six of his 15 points and English five during the run.
Hawaii played without all-Western Athletic Conference guard Predrag Savovic and forwards Nkeruwem Akpan and Luc-Arthur Vebobe.
The Rainbows were still awaiting information from the NCAA regarding possible suspensions for Savovic and Vebobe having to do with playing with professionals in unsanctioned games. The NCAA has questions regarding how Akpan originally came to the U.S. while in high school from his native Nigeria.
