LSU Tops Tennessee For SEC Championship

Atlanta-AP -- Number-21 Louisiana State denied Tennessee a spot in the Rose Bowl by upsetting the Volunteers 31-to-20. The Tigers also messed up the Bowl Championship Series. The standings will be released Sunday.

The Tigers were led by back-up quarterback Matt Mauck (MAHK) filling in after Rohan Davey was injured. Mauck ran for two touchdowns as L-S-U won its first Southeastern Conference title since 1988.

The Volunteers are 10-and-2. They came to Atlanta hoping to complete their run for the Rose Bowl and a chance to win the national championship.

Mauck is a 22-year-old freshman who spent three years as a catcher in the Chicago Cubs' organization. He put L-S-U ahead for good with a 13-yard touchdown on the second play of the fourth quarter. He also scored L-S-U's first TD on a four-yard run.

Louisiana State at 9-and-3 earns a spot in the Sugar Bowl against number-eight Illinois.
