Hawaii Travelers Take Part In Detroit Airport Opening Ceremonies

(Romulus, Michigan-AP) -- Some Hawaii travelers were part of the festivities celebrating a new airport terminal in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday. The Midfield Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport officially opened this morning with a ribbon-cutting and a welcoming ceremony for the first groups of passengers.

The first arrival was Northwest Airlines flight 922 from Honolulu, which arrived at 4:43 am -- almost 30 minutes ahead of schedule. Passengers on the first two arriving and departing flights at the terminal also got a bonus from Northwest Airlines, ten-thousand frequent flyer miles.

The first departing flight from Edward H-McNamara Terminal at Northwest WorldGateway was for Memphis and the second was headed to New York's LaGuardia Airport. Passenger Tony Michalik of Taylor, Michigan, says the new airport is fantastic -- noting how bright, clean and new it is.
