Two Hawaii Seniors Will Play Final Matches Against BYU

This weekend, the Warrior volleyball team ends the regular season against BYU. It'll be the final regular season home matches for both of Hawaii's seniors, Dejan Miladinovic and Vernon Podlewski. They are 2 guys that are big parts of warrior volleyball.

Ehen the volleyball Bows need points, they go to their go to guy, Costas Theocharidis. But when the need a defensive muscle and spark, they go looking for their 2 seniors.

Head coach, Mike Wilton says, "Dejan has been a rock of steadiness. He's just a real steady performer, night in, night out, getting us blocks. He's played through pain he's had shoulder problems but he's still out there."

Those shoulder problems, caused Dejan to sit out one season at the UH. But now, he's back to full strength. He's an All-America candidate and he's second the country's second leading blocker.

Dejan says, "Yeah I've seen it all, I've experienced it all, it was hard sitting out. It was hard for me. I've never had any surgeries. I appreciate volleyball even more now after the surgery. I appreciate every moment I stay on the court."

"We're going to miss him mightily. I'd take another one like him in a heart beat. And the same thing with Vernon," says Wilton. "You know, Vernon's been with us for three semesters and has solidified our passing and he's been a great defender and an all around hustle guy.

"It's been a great two years for me, playing here, going out and having a chance, knowing the circumstances. Being a small guy, playing in a big man's sport," says Vern.

At 5-8, Podlewski's not imposing at the net, but he is imposing on defense. He's the team leader in digs on the No. 2 team in the country. Not bad for a guy from the upcountry slopes of Maui.

Vernon says he will make upcountry Maui proud on his last night. "Yeah, I'm going to give a little shout out. A little Kamoda Bakery, Kitada's, upcountry, portagee style. I'm 1/8 Portuguese so. . . I can shout it out there."

Podlewski and Miladinovic, they'll lead the second ranked volleyball Warriors on to the court this weekend against No. 4 BYU. It's a 2 match series with Friday night's match coming to you live on the 5 at 7 o'clock.
