RUSTON, La. -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (14-23, 3-8 WAC) fell to the Lousiana Tech Bulldogs (16-21, 3-11) 6-5 at the J.C. Love Field Sunday. The crowd of 321 saw Chris Cowles (1-4) pick up the win while Sean Yamashita (2-4) suffered the loss. Derek Brewster picked up the save for the Bulldogs.
Hawai`i hit the ball well, getting 14 team hits, but left 10 runners on base including two runners in the ninth inning.
The Rainbows jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when Cortland Wilson homered to left field. But the Bulldogs answered as Dan Preaus hit a home run over the same part of the outfield wall to tie the game at two.
Gregg Omori drove in another run in the third before Tech again tied the game at three in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs then scored another three runs in the fourth before the Rainbows were able to respond with two runs in the fifth. But then the relief pitching took over as the game ended with the final score of 6-5.
Aaron Pribble pitched five solid innings of relief, giving up just four hits and no runs. Scooter Martines led the Rainbows in hitting, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Tim Montgomery added a 2-for-4 day with two runs, while Omori and Lane Nogawa both hit 2-for-5.
The Rainbows and Bulldogs will finish out their series tomorrow at 6 p.m. CDT. Ricky Bauer is scheduled to start the game for Hawai`i against Casey Blalock of Louisiana Tech.
