The Rainbow Wahine volleyball team is in a familiar spot being near the top of the national polls. A lot of the credit can be given to a brand new position on the court.
Two years ago NCAA men's volleyball instituted new position on the court called a libero. It's a defensive position aimed at creating longer rallies and eliminating serve, bump and kill type of points. This year women's volleyball also instituted that new position.
The new position is a big reason why the Rainbow Wahine are 6-0 and moving up in the national polls. Simply put, the libero cannot set or serve. It's basically a backrow specialist that can sub in and out and not count against a team alloted substitutions. And according to coach Shoki it's also helped the quality of his team's performance.
It also gives smaller players a chance to make the team and play a significant role in the game.
Next up for the Wahine is Cal Poly. The Wahine are hosting the Mustangs in a two match set. The first of which comes your way on Friday.
