Long Beach Poly Overcomes Kahuku

(Honolulu-AP) -- California prep football powerhouse Long Beach Poly defeated two-time defending Hawaii state champion Kahuku 42-16 tonight.

Derrick Jones and Lorenzo Bursey scored two touchdowns apiece for the Jackrabbits. Long Beach Poly scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters to take a 42-0 lead before Kahuku scored in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Waika Carvalho had a 24-yard TD run before throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Bronson Ponciano. Carvalho was 6-17 with two interceptions for 140 yards.

The contest was the first game of the doubleheader Football Classic at Aloha Stadium. The later game has St. Louis of Honolulu playing De La Salle of Concord, California, which won its previous 126 games.
